A woman died this morning after being rescued from the north Tenerife coast at Punta de Juan Fernández, Tacoronte. Emergency services say that they were called out at 11am with reports that the woman needed assistance having been pulled out of the water by fellow bathers after nearly drowning. Because of the difficulty of the terrain, a GES helicopter was dispatched to rescue her: it flew her to TFN where she was transferred to an ambulance and taken to HUC. Sadly, however, despite the efforts of all medical crew and personnel, she died shortly after admission in the second such incident in 24 hours.

Although yesterday’s case (see HERE) appears to have been a tragic accident with the woman falling into the sea, on this occasion the victim is confirmed to have suffered a cardiac arrest, a known symptom of cold water shock. As I said yesterday, Tenerife’s waters can be enjoyed safely but require care: please see HERE for advice on all aspects of staying safe in the water here, including beach flags.
