Tenerife itself is ringing the New Year in with minor tremors recorded around the island. IGN says that further seismic activity has been registered off the coast of Icod where a rockfall was triggered two days ago closing the main Garachico road: the latest tremor is just 1.5 mblg at a depth of 21 km. Tremors have also again been recorded in south Tenerife, with two near the centre of Vilaflor in the area of previous clusters: the two registered overnight were tiny – magnitudes 0.9 and 1.3 – at depths of 6 and 10km respectively. Further tremors were registered inland from Callao Salvaje – magnitude 1.0 at 7km – and in northwest Guía de Isora on the flanks of Pico Viejo – two at magnitude 1.3 at depths of 10 and 14 km. Please do note that experts say this type of activity is continuous in an active but quiescent volcano, and that they are continuing, as always, to monitor the situation but these clusters at this low level are normal and indeed desirable for an active volcano, and not something for anyone to be especially concerned about.
