Tenerife’s Island Water Board, the Consejo Insular de Aguas de Tenerife, says that it is investigating a sewage spill on the TF1 near the Playa de las Américas junction on Friday. Drivers have described the river of sewage as stinking, the stench causing many to feel sick, not least because traffic slowed and caused horrendous tailbacks, while some drivers tried to divert along the slip road. At one point the Board says that the motorway had to be closed entirely for two hours to allow workers to clean up the mess from the carriageway: works continued late into the evening, as shown in the photo left. The remnants of the spill are, indeed, still visible in parts of the motorway, and are said to have originated in a burst pipe of the nearby sewage treatment works, the damage possibly caused by works being undertaken at the plant. The Board says that an initial report of the investigation will be available in the coming days.
