By Spring, the speed limit of 100km/h on roads without a central reservation and with a verge of at least 1.5m will be reduced to 90km/h for cars, motorbikes and buses (80km/h for other vehicles) bringing the maximum speed limit of such roads into line with that on all other secondary roads outside urban areas. The measure was approved by the Spanish Cabinet on Friday, 28 December, as a modification to article 48 of the Reglamento General de Circulación, and Tráfico director Pere Navarro says that he hopes it will reduce traffic accident fatalities by some 10% a year. Many roads where this applies have already been displaying new signposts for some time in anticipation of the introduction of the measuure, and Tráfico has a month to replace the remainder. The measure will come into force in February or March, Tráfico says, with confirmation of the specific date shortly. The new speed limits are here in graphic form:
