Arona mayor José Julián Mena has signed an agreement with the Spanish Government to take over the Casa del Mar in Los Cristianos near the harbour to convert it into a social centre with appropriate related activities and therapies for patients with conditions such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s diseases. The emblematic building was ceded by the national Government last October and now the council is in full possession to start its conversion into a landmark that serves a much-needed and hugely-important function.

Mayor Mena said that “many local residents, especially in Los Cristianos itself but also the elderly throughout the municipality, have been calling for years for the council to take over this building and improve it from its state of abandonment into a facility useful for everyone. After intense negotiations, today we can say that the Casa del Mar has now become part of the municipal heritage to be converted into a great social centre for all the elderly in Arona”.

The building is, in fact, already partly used as a Third Age Centre for certain activities, but most of it needs considerable refurbishment which the council was unable to undertake when the building officially belonged to the Spanish Government. The council’s departments for the elderly and Social Services are already working on the plans for the services that will finally be offered in the building.
