There has long been controversy over reports of people being victims of  “the date rape drug Devil’s Breath”, with many including scientists saying they are fake news or the matter is a conspiracy theory, but still the stories keep coming. The latest is of an Irishman who says he was forced to empty his bank account after being sprayed with it in Tenerife. The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs has warned tourists to be vigilant about such drugs in Spain after the man, from Wicklow but working and resident in Switzerland, is said to have had his telephone, watch and several hundred Euros stolen in Playa de las Américas.

Named by the Irish press as 27-year-old David Nelson, the attack apparently took place nearly a month ago on 23 March. After having some drinks, he says, he was approached by a woman chatting him up but who then sprayed the substance in his face. Police later told him it was Devil’s Breath, he told interviewers. “I remember very few things after being sprayed. My phone was taken, gold watch, bracelet, €600 from my wallet and I was then taken to a ATM and the girl proceeded to take what money she could from my Irish and Swiss bank accounts until the cards declined. This drug turns you into a zombie.”

Police have confirmed the incident, and the Irish Foreign Affairs Department say that their advice to travellers to be wary of date rape drugs has been confirmed by Spanish authorities. This is good general advice, of course, even while the furore over the fake or genuine nature of Devil’s Breath itself continues.
