The whole southbound carriageway was at a virtual standstill for over two hours, with the build-up of traffic directed along the hard shoulder past the incident. Ultimately, however, despite the disruption and apparent chaos of the accident and the multiple vehicles involved, the ambulances called to the scene had to transfer just five people to hospital for checks. None are said to be in serious condition.
