Updated 1 August 2019: Guía de Isora Ayuntamiento’s town planning councillor Eduardo González has today said that although some of the improvements demanded by local businesses and residents have been achieved, the council is continuing to press the Cabildo to progress works on the Avenida Marítima. González said that he understood the inconvenience being caused and that his department is doing everything it can “to get the Cabildo’s contracts awarded for the works to meet deadlines”.

Meetings have been held with local businesses to explain the reasons for the delay to works on the Avenida El Emigrante, the first phase of which began last September and were intended to be completed in eight months. The council says that it has moved works barriers so that people can walk freely and use the public spaces, as well as opening the access road for locals needing to get to Calles Isla Bonita and La Gomera, as well as the harbour.

The project is intended to modernize the promenade between the harbour and the plaza Las Salinas, creating an open feel such as has been achieved in the San Telmo area of Puerto de la Cruz, and like that town, getting rid of the wall that prevents a clear view out to sea. There will also be graded viewing areas, shaded spots and a cycle path, all in an area which, the council says, was becoming outdated and having a negative effect on local businesses.

It is perhaps also worth remembering that the mayor of Guía de Isora until only the other day, Pedro Martín, is now President of Tenerife since the PSOE took control of the island Cabildo, so this will no doubt give rise to hopes that obstacles can be removed and paperwork streamlined so that these works can finally be brought to a successful conclusion.
