In the run-up to Christmas, many supermarkets and other stores will hold collections for local people who are less advantaged as others. One such supermarket is the new Mercadona in Santiago del Teide, which is holding a Gran Recogida de Alimentos under the auspices of the Tenerife Food Bank. The collection will be made over two days this weekend, and is in conjunction and collaboration with the Lion’s Club, Santiago del Teide Ayuntamiento, Social Services and Protección Civil. Anyone who would like to donate should go to the shop on either this Friday 30 November or Saturday 1 December with non-perishable items. Organizers say they will also welcome volunteers to man the collection stall, and anyone who is able to help should call 607 967 915. Items most needed are oil, rice, pasta, tinned goods, pulses/legumes, flour, as well as bathroom and children’s products.
