The famous Los Realejos fireworks 3 May

The famous Los Realejos fireworks 3 May

Although not a Tenerife-wide public holiday, one part of Los Realejos’ Cruces & Fuegos fiesta on Friday, 3 May, draws people from around the island and even further afield. The fiesta itself is part of the Fiestas de la Cruz held throughout Tenerife (see HERE), but in Los Realejos it lasts just over a month from the end of April to the beginning of June, and the fireworks are what people come from far and wide to see. They have been granted National Tourist Interest status and are simply spectacular, long recognized as the best by far in Tenerife, and now officially one of the best in the whole of Spain.

The fireworks are staged as a competition between two streets – Calle El Medio Arriba and Calle El Sol – in Los Realejos for the best display, a tradition that started in 1770. The fireworks manufacturers Hermanos Toste themselves date back to 1788 and have a factory in Los Realejos, the only one in the Canaries. The displays are always broadcast live widely on social media (especially Los Realejos Ayuntamiento) from around 9.30pm, with the whole fireworks display lasting for around three hours. The following short video of 2011′s displays will hopefully give some idea of what to expect.

The Languages of Tenerife

The Languages of Tenerife

The native language is Spanish. In the south English is spoken by everyone with German and Italian common too, but in the north, fluent English is spoken by fewer people. No big problem should be anticipated regarding communication, though.

A good tip is to pronounce a soft ‘c’ as an ‘s’ instead of ‘th’. So gracias is pronounced ‘gras-yahs’ not ‘grath-yahs’ or ‘grasth-yahs’.

The official language of Tenerife is Spanish, but the accent is comparable to South America, as is mainland Spain. You will find that most locals speak English, especially in popular tourist destinations. It’s always fun to try talking to locals in their own language. Even if it is basic, trying to do this is polite.

In the Canary Islands, you speak Spanish in the Canary Islands in the Canary Islands. This variant is very similar to Caribbean Spanish and is characterized by the omission of the consonant and the inhalation or nose. The Portuguese strongly influenced the language and dialect heard today due to the historical efforts to colonize the canary islands. Even Tenerife’s unique and delicious world famous drink the barraquito has portuguese roots.

A language that is unique to the canary islands that you might unknowingly hear during your visit to Tenerife is Silbo, a whistling language from the island of  La Gomera (viewable from anywhere on the southwest coast of Tenerife, like Costa Adaje) Using Silbo is a very effective way to communicate with people 5 km away before pulling out the phone and also when stuck in traffic it can be very convenient. It is sometimes referred to as the Spanish “whistle” and it is worth noting that the name “silbo” is accompanied by the automatic word “silbar”. This means “tweeting in Spanish”.

Formed by a volcanic eruption 7-9 million years ago, this prehistoric mountain range is the oldest part of the island, and a trip here feels like stepping back in time to another world. The Awe-inspiring Punta de Teno,

The Awe-inspiring Punta de Teno,

This rugged, rocky headland ten kilometers from Buenavista is the most westerly point on the island and a great place to get away from the crowds and blow away the cobwebs with a bit of bracing sea air. Admire the active lighthouse perched precipitously on the rocks, or relax on the bay and enjoy stunning views of La Gomera, La Palma, and the Teno Mountains. A word of warning: Check the forecast before you go as the road there is closed in bad weather.

The Punta de Teno lighthouse is an active lighthouse in the municipality of Buenavista del Norte on the Canary Island of Tenerife. The current lighthouse was the second to be constructed on the narrow rocky headland of Punta de Teno, which is the most westerly point on the island. It is one of seven lighthouses which mark the coastline of Tenerife and lies between the Punta Rasca lighthouse to the southeast, and the modern lighthouse of Buenavista to the northeast.

The first lighthouse was completed in 1897, as part of the first maritime lighting plan for the Canaries. Built in a similar style to other Canarian 19th century lights, it consists of a whitewashed single story building, with dark volcanic rock used for the masonry detailing. The light was shown from a lantern room at the top of an eight-meter high masonry tower, attached to the seaward side of the house, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It remained in service until it was replaced in the 1970s by the new modern tower.
