La Laguna Noche en Blanco 2019

La Laguna Noche en Blanco 2019

It’s now an established annual event in the run up to Christmas that attracts people to La Laguna in their hundreds of thousands, and this year’s Noche en Blanco will take place on Saturday 16 November. The previous occasions have been enormous successes, and this year looks set to be just as brilliant, with a wide range of activities including street theatre, live music in the open air, shops open all night, street stalls, food, drink, church recitals, cultural events in every historic building or museum with tour guides giving different sorts of guided tours at intervals throughout the night – it is a real experience not to be missed.

Things start late afternoon around 5pm or so, with dozens of volunteers on hand to help co-ordinate and inform about all the free activities on offer throughout the town, and advise on everything from security or health concerns to locations and transport. Parking will be very scarce, so the best option will once again be to park in the Santa Cruz intercambiador car park and get the tram – which runs all night for this event with increased services – all the way to La Laguna’s La Trinidad terminus, which is right at the start of the old town and the night’s activities.

Tenerife to enjoy a week of events leading up to World Tourism Day on 27 September

Next week will see a whole range of events celebrating World Tourism Day. The big day itself is Friday 27 September, but really now it’s a whole week of events from markets to live music, competitions and shows, food fairs and much more. One of the first to start is  Santiago del Teide where the council has announced a series of entertainments in both Playa La Arena and Plaza Buganvilla in Los Gigantes. World Tourism Day has an official website HERE, but wherever you are in the tourist areas, there is going to be something going on!

Walk for life 2019

Walk for life 2019

Preparations have already been long underway for this year’s Walk for Life, which will be held on Sunday 15 December. Last year, a record-breaking pink wave of 5,200 including the mayors of both Arona and Adeje took part, raising €35.500, and this event just keeps getting bigger and bigger. For those who don’t already know, the walk takes place every December, and this is the 15th year it will have been held.

It is an event which brings together Spanish cancer charities and support organisations, people living with cancer, their friends and families, those who have lost someone to cancer, and on a wider scale the general public of Adeje and Arona. The start of the walk alternates between Adeje and Arona and ends in the other municipality, and this year it will start at 11am in the CC Salytien (Costa Adeje) and head to the Golden Mile (Avda Las Américas) in Playa de las Américas (Arona).

Walk for Life is a full charity in every sense that we would understand the word (see HERE for an explanation). It is the Fundación Canaria Carrera por la Vida and has a website HERE and a Facebook page HERE.

Loro Parque rescues and recuperates loggerhead turtle with spinal injuries caused by boat propeller collision

Loro Parque rescues and recuperates loggerhead turtle with spinal injuries caused by boat propeller collision

Photo: Loro Parque.

Loro Parque has released the following lovely video of Federica the loggerhead turtle who suffered spinal injuries from a ship’s propeller off the Italian coast earlier this year. The Parque says that Federica is now fully adapted to her new home in the Humboldt Penguin Aquarium in Planet Penguin, and has progressed a lot in her training, which reflects in her overall well-being.

The turtle’s injuries meant that she suffered a deformation in her shell, buoyancy problems and serious damage to her spinal cord. At one point, it was even mooted that euthanasia could be an option since in her condition she would be absolutely unable to survive in the wild. Loro Parque wanted to give her a chance, however, and her condition improves by the day, and she is in receipt of constant excellent veterinary care.

She is fed at a distance as can be seen in the video to allow her caregivers to control her health and wellbeing but avoid causing her any kind of stress. The Parque says that her remarkably quick adaptation to this method  contributes to guaranteeing her wellbeing, and allows her diet to be tailored according to her needs as determined by weight and blood test results.

Loro Parque says that  this charismatic turtle weighs 24.5 kilos, and acts as a true ambassador for all turtles, which have to face numerous difficulties in the wild, such as the growing maritime traffic that often leads to collisions. In addition, by welcoming her, Loro Parque reinforces its commitment to the protection of biodiversity and boosts the awareness of its visitors about the dramatic reality faced by the oceans and the species that inhabit them.

It is incredible how much she has evolved since her arrival!

The Amigos de Gillian Banks charity puts on The Chicago Experience to raise funds for underprivileged children

The Amigos de Gillian Banks is a registered association which raises funds for underprivileged children. The asociación is fully legal and what we would understand as a charity in the proper sense of the word (see HERE), and helps these children with vocational and educational training and support. Their next event is The Chicago Experience which is being performed on Monday 28 October at the Los Cristianos Auditorium: the charity aims to raise enough to buy all the children at the El Valito Centre in El Fraile and the Guaidyl Centre in Granadilla school books and some school uniforms. Tickets costing just €15 are available online HERE, as well as at the Los Cristianos Cultural Centre, and at the auditorio box office.
