The Amigos de Gillian Banks charity puts on The Chicago Experience to raise funds for underprivileged children

The Amigos de Gillian Banks is a registered association which raises funds for underprivileged children. The asociación is fully legal and what we would understand as a charity in the proper sense of the word (see HERE), and helps these children with vocational and educational training and support. Their next event is The Chicago Experience which is being performed on Monday 28 October at the Los Cristianos Auditorium: the charity aims to raise enough to buy all the children at the El Valito Centre in El Fraile and the Guaidyl Centre in Granadilla school books and some school uniforms. Tickets costing just €15 are available online HERE, as well as at the Los Cristianos Cultural Centre, and at the auditorio box office.

Help the Adeje volunteer bomberos in their latest fundraiser

Help the Adeje volunteer bomberos in their latest fundraiser

Since the terrible fires in Gran Canaria, many people have been asking how they can help support the bomberos. The fire brigades in each island are part of an official association – the Consorcio – and in Tenerife that comprises the five professional and the nine volunteer stations, known as Parques. All are overseen by the island Cabildos and Canarian Government, and are coordinated by 112 Emergency Services.

Clearly the volunteer brigades rely on donations from the public and in this respect many hold charity events to raise funds. The latest one is by Adeje, and it’s on Saturday 5 October between 12 noon and 11pm at the Parque de Bomberos de Adeje which is near the Karting in Fañabe, virtually straight across the motorway from the Hiperdino.

Alcalá’s famous fireworks for fiestas patronales on 15 August

Alcalá’s famous fireworks for fiestas patronales on 15 August

Apart from being the patron saint of Tenerife and of the town of Candelaria itself, the Virgen de Candelaria is also the patron saint of Alcalá on the west coast, and every August, not only is there a major fiesta actually in Candelaria (see HERE), but there is also a fireworks display during Alcalá’s own fiestas patronales that has become known as the place to see fireworks in south Tenerife. The fireworks are organized by the Los Realejos Toste brothers who have put on the exhibition, involving hundreds of kilos of gunpowder, for over 80 years. The display is acknowledged as the best on the island after only the famous Los Realejos competition itself.

The fireworks display is part of the fiestas’ main religious day, which always falls on 15 August. The day starts around 10am with a procession carrying the venerated image of the Virgen to the harbour, a flotilla of boats sailing along the coastine between Playa San Juan and Puerto de Santiago for much of the afternoon, and finally, the fireworks at midnight which always last for at least twenty minutes and often over half an hour. There is always a huge crowd of many thousands, with a considerable number sailing into the little bay in the evening in order to see the fireworks from the sea: there’s an increasing trend too for chartered boat trip tickets being sold for the event. For non-locals, Guía de Isora ayuntamiento always asks people to share cars, or to get to the town by taxi or bus, to avoid traffic congestion as much as possible because the whole area is always packed.

Immediately below is a short video which should give an idea of how incredible this firework display is, and below that, a 20 minute video from Guía de Isora Ayuntamiento of the full display from 2017.
