Flowered Easter Festival

Flowered Easter Festival

Every Easter all eyes are on Adeje for its passion play (see HERE for last year’s article), but Guía de Isora has a unique and now internationally famous Easter programme, the star of which is the annual Pascua Florida. This sees the town’s streets filled with floral displays evoking the stations of the cross, as can be seen in the video below from a few years ago. In the old town centre itself, the plazas and pretty cobbled streets are filled with floral displays and contemporary art in a beautiful and moving visual representation of Christ’s journey through Jerusalem to the place of his crucifixion and death.

This year, the eleventh for the Pascua Florida, the displays will be on view in the casco – the oldest central part of Guía de Isora town – from 5pm on Maundy Thursday 18 April until Easter Sunday 21 April, with music and performances to accompany the floral displays. The Ayuntamiento says that this Easter floral tribute is unique in Spain, and in thematic and artistic terms Guía de Isora’s Pascua Florida has become almost as well known nationally as Adeje’s Pasión.

This year, for the first time, the council has announced an inaugural multi-disciplinary event on Saturday 13 April at 8.30pm in the town’s auditorium. The event is themed AMOR OMNIA VINCIT (Love Conquers All), and it’s described as a dreamy spectacle full of beauty, emotion and sensitivity bringing together dance, music and floral art in a performance set to surprise.

In addition to the displays themselves, Guía de Isora Ayuntamiento holds a photographic competition with monetary prizes. I’ll post details of this year’s in due course.

Carnival 2019: Los Gigantes and Los Cristianos Record Crowds

Carnival 2019: Los Gigantes and Los Cristianos Record Crowds

Updated 10 March: It’s already billed as the second biggest carnival in the world after Rio de Janeiro’s, but now, as Santa Cruz celebrates the final day of the city’s carnival, organizers say that yesterday’s Carnaval del Día had record crowds with over 400,000 people crowding the capital. There will be as many tonight, they expect, for the Fin de fiesta party in procession before culminating in the Plaza de La Candelaria to the side of the Plaza de España’s fountain outside the Cabildo. The attention of many, especially in the south, will now switch to Los Gigantes where carnival starts next Friday (programme HERE) and Los Cristianos starting on the 21st (programme HERE).

Updated 28 February: Santa Cruz now has its carnival queen for 2019! Last night’s gala had a record 19 candidates but the winner in the end was 22-year-old Priscila Medina Quintena representing Autoinsular Citroën in a Fantasía called La Nuit designed by La Victoria de Acentejo atelier Sedomir Rodríguez de la Sierra.

The designer workshop specialises in couture gowns for fiestas and weddings, and they could find their victory last night brings them no end of customers because one can easily imagine this fantasia on the red carpet being worn by Rihanna or Beyoncé rather than the traditional fantasia which is more like a magical mechanical masterpiece on wheels! (Click the image left to see full size). Priscila herself says that she’s still coming to terms with her win and doubts she’ll believe it until she sets foot, in her fantasia, on the streets of Santa Cruz in Friday evening’s opening parade.

Meanwhile, Los Gigantes, has announced that its own very popular carnival with the theme of the Olympian Gods will take place between 15 and 23 March and the programme is HERE.

Updated 27 February: For some, perhaps many, it’s the highlight of any carnival when the carnival queen is chosen, and tonight is the night in the Santa Cruz Carnaval. It’ll be live on La2 from 9.30pm, and with the ceremony over, Carnaval spills onto the streets of the capital. The opening parade is this Friday, 1 March, leaving the Plaza de la República Dominicana around 8pm and then proceeding via avenida Asuncionistas, Ramón y Cajal, Galcerán, Plaza de Weyler, Méndez Núñez, El Pilar, Villalba Hervás and La Marina, terminating in avenida Francisco La Roche. There’ll be a few sleepless nights in Santa Cruz over the next ten or so days!

Updated 23 February: Carnaval season is now in full swing. In Santa Cruz, the murga groups have competed and now the music and dancing groups have taken the stage and the carnival queens are being chosen: the young and mature queens have been chosen with the main Reina gala this coming Wednesday. After that, carnival will spill onto the streets of Santa Cruz for a full-blown party culminating in the burial of the sardine. In Puerto de la Cruz carnival is also underway with the carnival queen being chosen on Thursday coming. The full programmes are HERE for Santa Cruz and HERE for Puerto de la Cruz. Los Cristianos carnival starts on 21 March, and its programme is HERE.

Fun Charity Event

The work of the association El Arca de Noé (Noah’s Ark) primarily focuses on the needs of those who for lots of reasons have been left behind, some by choice, some by self inflicted problems, others through mental illness or simply bad luck and can not face to go home, deeming themselves a failure before their family and friends. The association is registered, and so a full charity in our sense of the word, and reaches out to those it believes it can help, inviting them to discuss their issues over a meal, providing some clean clothing, and seeking an action plan for their re integration back into society through re-hab if necessary or simply by putting them back in touch with family and friends, updating their travel documents and getting them home.

Many of the people the charity helps have no documentation, which has often been stolen or lost, and in particular are also not able to work here or receive any state assistance. El Arca de Noé is only a small group which rents a small apartment as a refuge and meeting place, where
no one is refused though they unable to provide accommodation. Instead, they maintain a strong link with the Consulate and the few Canarian rehab facilities available to the undocumented; as such there is rarely a week goes by that they are unable to get an expat on his or her way home or sent for treatment.

On Tuesday 12 February there is a charity fun night in Buddies Bar in Parque Margarita, Los Cristianos. Anyone who would like to donate prizes for the raffles can drop them off at the bar in advance – details on the poster – and of course El Arca de Noé hopes as many as possible will attend the event itself on the 12th. If anyone would like to help generally independently of the charity event, clothing and food can always be donated, indeed the charity collects if you send an email to tenerife.noahs.ark@gmail.com or phone 634 142 041 or 674 091 254. Noah’s Ark also has a Facebook page HERE.
