Fiestas Patronales in Candelaria start today, with Guanche re-enactment on 14 August, and public holiday on 15th

Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, La Morenita, the black Virgin Mary, is the patron saint of the Canary Islands with an official public holiday in Tenerife in February since she is also specifially Tenerife’s patron saint. And if La Morenita is associated with anywhere in Tenerife, it’s Candelaria itself, with the town’s fiestas patronales taking place from today until 18 August.

August 15 is itself a Canaries-wide public holiday for Asunción (Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven) and the focal point is the celebration and veneration in Candelaria of the Virgin in her personification as La Morenita in the basilica built on the site where the original Guanche inhabitants of the islands worshipped. The tradition is said to have started when two Guanche shepherds found a wooden image on a Güímar beach; the icon was identifed as a representation of the native goddess Chaxiraxi, and was worshipped devoutly. When the Spanish conquered the Canaries in the second half of the 15th century, they found this tradition alive and well in Candelaria. It was said to date back a hundred years, hence the traditional date of in 1390 given for the original Guanche vision.

The Christian invaders, however, told the Guanches that their goddess was really the Virgin Mary, and so Chaxiraxi was transformed and redeified as the Virgen de Candelaria. The current church dates to 1959, and is set to one side of the Dominican monastery built in the 16th century: the hermitage dates to 1803 after the original building was destroyed by fire. The cave where the Guanches worshipped their native goddess is still nearby, though the little wooden icon itself was lost during torrential rains in 1826. Next to the plaza outside the complex are the larger-than-life bronze statues of the nine Guanche Menceyes, rulers of the kingdoms of Tenerife before the Spanish arrived: it is one of Tenerife’s “Unmissables” – see HERE.

The celebrations on the 15th include a religious Mass televised live from the basilica and attended by public figures which have included even Spanish royalty, either in person or by representation. It is the evening of the 14th, though, that has become most famous for the annual re-enactment of the discovery of that original wooden icon. It is hugely popular, drawing massive crowds, and indeed the whole celebration in Candelaria draws groups of walkers from all over the island, who come over Teide, mountain paths, minor roads, and even along the motorways, to Candelaria in a famous and much revered pilgrimage. The video below is from Canarian television coverage in 2014.

ARN Culture Pride music festival in Playa de las Américas 18-23 June

ARN Culture & Business Pride will see Playa de las Américas turned into a real party venue for a while next month. Every night from Tuesday 18th to Sunday 23rd June there will a wide range of entertainments, parties, concerts, art and fashion events and much more, all orientated to the LGTBIQ community. This is the third time the event has been held here, and organizers stress that this is not devoted to the gay community but they hope all the public will take part and enjoy the itinerary, and increase interest and understanding in the process. Arona Ayuntamiento says that after last year’s success, the event is now instantly among  the top ten such events internationally.

This year, there’ll be some keeping up to do since the former Olympic athlete Caitlyn Jenner will be attending! In a first visit to Spain, Jenner will be presented with the Alan Turing LGTBIQ award for commitment to the visibility of the trans collective. The festival itself will maintain the same format as the first two editions which have made it a benchmark of international and accessible gatherings of the most diverse perspectives. There is full information about the festival on the dedicated website HERE and there is a Facebook page for the event HERE.

The famous Los Realejos fireworks 3 May

The famous Los Realejos fireworks 3 May

Although not a Tenerife-wide public holiday, one part of Los Realejos’ Cruces & Fuegos fiesta on Friday, 3 May, draws people from around the island and even further afield. The fiesta itself is part of the Fiestas de la Cruz held throughout Tenerife (see HERE), but in Los Realejos it lasts just over a month from the end of April to the beginning of June, and the fireworks are what people come from far and wide to see. They have been granted National Tourist Interest status and are simply spectacular, long recognized as the best by far in Tenerife, and now officially one of the best in the whole of Spain.

The fireworks are staged as a competition between two streets – Calle El Medio Arriba and Calle El Sol – in Los Realejos for the best display, a tradition that started in 1770. The fireworks manufacturers Hermanos Toste themselves date back to 1788 and have a factory in Los Realejos, the only one in the Canaries. The displays are always broadcast live widely on social media (especially Los Realejos Ayuntamiento) from around 9.30pm, with the whole fireworks display lasting for around three hours. The following short video of 2011′s displays will hopefully give some idea of what to expect.
