Overturned lorry causes chaos as it spills load at entry to Los Cristianos

It actually looked far worse, thankfully, than it really was, but it really did look terrible! A lorry carrying loose waste overturned this morning by the Hipertrebol in Los Cristianos, blocking the dual carriageway to the TF1 from the main roundabout at the entrance to town.

Emergency services say that the 53-year-old driver was fortunate only to have suffered cuts and bruises in the accident but his lorry’s load was less lucky, being spread all over the road and central reservation. Needless to say, anyone trying to get in or especially out of town early this morning experienced significant delays, but the Policía Local say that the road was fully reopened shortly before 11.30am.

Adeje’s lack of blue flag beaches is because the region did not participate in the 2019 programme because of its involvement in the Intelligent Tourism Destination (DTI) project

Adeje Ayuntamiento has issued a statement following the blue flag beach announcements in which the municipality’s beaches did not receive a single award. The council says that in actual fact it decided not to be part of the applications for consideration in 2019 since the region’s Adeje Intelligent Tourism Destination (DTI) project meant that there could be no guarantee that at any given moment the proper conditions to be awarded a blue flag would have been in place. The council says that this should not remotely be taken to indicate that the quality of these beaches or the services on offer has suffered any reduction, and they continue to operate as top quality locations with top class services.

The DTI project proposes, among other things, ‘smart beaches’, which will use an integrated information technology, with up-to-the minute monitoring, recording numbers of beach users, the real-time state of services, cost of water in the showers, etc, to improve the beaches. The installation of these new services and technologies implies, by necessity, a series of work and structural modifications which would have had implications during the Blue Flag inspection period, although none of the new installations will in any way be detrimental to the quality of the beaches or the services on offer.

As such, therefore, Adeje hasn’t actually “lost” blue flags, but decided not to seek inclusion in the campaign for the above reasons. This does not, in any way, signify that the quality of the Adeje beaches has been compromised; in fact the opposite is the case, with months of work to regulate, improve and increase the services and conditions of use and quality on the beaches. This is reflected in the recent Trip Advisor beach voting which listed the El Duque beach as the best in Tenerife and the sixth best in Spain in their “Travellers Choice 2019”.

The Brexit post: British Government confirms UK’s participation in EU elections later this month

The Brexit post: British Government confirms UK’s participation in EU elections later this month

Updated 7 May: It has been confirmed this afternoon by David Lidington, essentially the deputy PM, that the UK will indeed be taking part in the EU Parliamentary elections on 23 May. Anyone wanting to vote and still not registered … you have until midnight. Tonight. There is more information from the Government HERE.

Updated 30 April: The British Government has issued the following statement with regard to voting in the UK’s possible participation in the European Parliamentary elections next month.

Information for UK nationals on voting in the European Parliament elections

The UK Government wants to ratify the Withdrawal Agreement on our departure from the EU in the next few weeks. This would mean we would not participate in the European Parliament elections.

However, there is a possibility that the UK will have to participate in the elections. In this scenario, if you wish to vote, you should ensure that you are registered either with your local electoral authorities here in Spain or in the UK.

The European Parliament elections in Spain will be held on 26 May. If the UK remains in the EU at the time of the election, voting will take place in the UK on 23 May.

The deadline for registering to vote in the local and European Parliament elections in Spain was 30 January 2019. If you are not already registered to vote in Spain, you could instead choose to vote in the UK, as long as you have been registered to vote in the UK within the last 15 years. The deadline for registering to vote in EP elections in the UK is midnight on Tuesday 7 May. The process can be done online and you can register to vote either by post or by proxy. It is important to be aware that you cannot vote in both countries.

Loro Parque shows how they replicate animals’ natural feeding environments and keep them healthy and interested in their diets as major reports show species in the wild are being destroyed at an unprecedented rate

Some of the Loro Parque lemurs which appear in the video and which have been included in the reports as critically endangered in the wild. Photo: Loro Parque.

It’s wonderful how they recreate the natural environment as far as they possibly can for these animals, some of whom belong to species that have just in the last few days been detailed by the biggest environmental catastrophe reports compiled for years.

These reports show we are killing species in the wild at a rate that is unprecedented in human history, that we have already triggered the sixth mass extinction event in planetary history, and that we are dooming ourselves to extinction if we don’t act because we need these species, especially the insects that we have pretty much wiped out from the planet (anyone else remember car journeys of even five minutes where the windscreen would be covered with splattered insects? Now you can go one end of the country to another with nary a moth on the windscreen).

I know people don’t like the “tanks”, and some deplore any and all zoos on “principle”, but the conservation and preservation carried out by Loro Parque will contribute to saving the planet, however much some loathe it. I personally love it, at least for its mammalian and especially avian work. I hope you like the video they’ve released today, anyway, showing how they try to replicate natural feeding environments for animals, keeping them healthy and interested in their diets.
