Awesome hiking destinations in Tenerife

Awesome hiking destinations in Tenerife

Tenerife is a paradise when it comes to hiking. You have so many trails to try – all of them giving you a different understanding of the diverse landscape in Tenerife. We created a list with our favourite places for hiking on the island.

Cuevas Negras

You can enjoy this beautiful trail starting from either Los Silos or Erjos, it’s up to you. The stairs take you to a serene place surrounded by black and brown cliffs. You get the best views of Montana de Taco, an old, tiny volcano situated in the municipality of Los Silos that is used as a water reservoir now. Cuevas Negras literally means black caves – on each side of the trail you will be able to see impressive caves. If you want to, you can leave the main path and choose to see the Lomo Morin waterfall as well. This way, at the end of the day, you will have nice memories and pictures of caves, huge cliffs and impressive landscapes of Isla Baja.

Barranco de Chamorga and Faro de Anaga

This is a circular route that will take you from the small and romantic village of Chamorga to a remote beach in Anaga called Roque de Bermejo. On the way, you will be able to see beautiful houses, remote gardens and maybe some goats enjoying their day peacefully. The lighthouse gives you an amazing view of the ocean. We recommend having a picnic on the beach because it is so serene and there are not many people around. The Rural Park of Anaga is a very peaceful place to spend your afternoon. Once you get back to Chamorga, you can enjoy a cold beer in the local bar and also have some lunch. In the afternoon, you can see the locals having a chat in the village or playing chess on the benches, so you can have a full authentic experience.

Los Organos

If you are a fan of relaxing walks in pine forests, this trail is for you. It is located in the North of Tenerife, on the main road that leads to El Teide from La Orotava. The path will take you to a huge cliff that resembles an organ. There are some springs on your way so there is no need to worry about freshwater this time. There are plenty of hiking choices in the area so maybe you should look out for those who seem the most attractive. Some hidden paths take you to beautiful viewpoints of Teide and the valley of La Orotava and others take you up the mountain, all the way to the National Park of Teide.

Barranco del Infierno

Barranco del Infierno is a breathtaking canyon that takes you to the heart of the mountain. It is located very close to Adeje, and that is why it is best to go there in the morning – it usually gets quite hot in the afternoon. At the end of the path, there is a serene waterfall waiting for you. In order to get there, you need to make a reservation and buy the entrance tickets here. We recommend this place because it has amazing flora and fauna and also because the path is well taken care of. There are not many places as breathtaking as this one so it should definitely be on your list.

Adventurous activities to try while in Tenerife

Adventurous activities to try while in Tenerife

This article is for all those who are passionate about adrenaline. We are going to give you some ideas about how you can spice it up a little bit while on the sunny island of Tenerife. This place offers plenty of opportunities for the adventurous souls, so let’s get into it and find the most suitable for you.

Drift diving

Drift diving is a type of scuba diving that you cannot practice everywhere. Tenerife is one of those blessed locations where you can actually experience the serene movement caused by the current. It is certainly an experience of a lifetime because being carried away by a force that you can’t see is super exciting and entertaining. Also, if you have a lucky day, maybe a turtle will pass by and wave at you.

Paragliding

We think paragliding in Tenerife is awesome because the landscape is amazing and being in the air gives you better views of the island. People come here from all over the world to enjoy this experience and take the best pictures of the huge cliffs, beautiful ocean and Teide from the air.

Canyoning

Due to its very rugged landscape, Tenerife has actually more than one choice for canyoning. If you have never heard of this activity, well, just imagine you in a wetsuit going through a canyon. Sometimes you climb on waterfalls, sometimes you descend using a rope but you always have fun. This type of activity is really wild and it can actually take you to places that only a few lucky ones get to see.

Climbing

Climbing in Tenerife is a dream, especially when you consider the beautiful pictures that you might be able to take. There are so many places where you can practice this extreme sport, especially when you think about the amount of cliffs around the island.

Surfing

There are some awesome places for surfing in Tenerife, both in the North and the South. Probably the most popular place is Playa de las Americas, a place that is suitable for beginners as well. Other places include El Medano, where you can try windsurfing and kitesurfing if you are up for it or you can choose one of the wild beaches in the North, close to Bajamar or Benijo.

Best beaches in Tenerife

Best beaches in Tenerife

The beautiful island of Tenerife is filled with beaches so you can find at least one to fit your needs. You have black and golden sand beaches, but you also can enjoy some special features such as waterfalls on a beach, huge cliffs to surround it or just stunning views.

We tried to dedicate an article to those beaches that are not so popular so that you can enjoy a nice afternoon without any stress. Bring your sunscreen and swimming costume, of course.

1. Benijo beach

This is the best place on the island to watch the sunset but it is also a good choice for sunbathing and having some fun in the waves. There are some cliffs that just come up from the water to make the entire landscape look more impressive. Also, while you are there, make sure you try some grilled goat cheese manufactured right there, in the village. Sometimes, the waves are quite impressive so you can take your board with you, to practice your skills.

2. Playa de Roque Bermejo

You need to hike to get there, but it will definitely be worth it. The trip starts in Chamorga, a remote village in Anaga Rural Park. You can either descend through the Barranco de Roque Bermejo or choose to go on a path closer to the big cliffs that end in the ocean. Both of these hiking trails are just breathtaking, so we recommend you to descend on one and return on the other. The beach at the end of the trail has beautiful views and there is a small romantic village close to it. It is a truly special place on the island.

3. Playa de los Roques

There is no better beach on the island for a good Instagram picture. Close to the shore, there is this big stone arch and you can actually go beneath it. The place gives you an idea about the power of the waves and how, in time, the ocean is the greatest sculptor in nature. Not many people know about this place, so you can always find your place for some sunbathing. It is located close to Puerto de la Cruz, so you can take a walk there and enjoy the city as well.

4. Masca Beach

So maybe you have already heard about the Masca trail, but let us tell you a secret. At the end of the trail, there is this magical beach, surrounded by huge cliffs. Here you get one of the best views of La Gomera. You can reach this beach by hiking from Masca village (but you have to sign up for this here). Another option is to go on a boat trip, starting from Los Gigantes. If you are lucky, you might see some dolphins and pilot whales on your way.

So, these are our favourite beaches. Let us know about yours by posting a picture of it on social media and tagging us @TenerifeBuzz. Also, find out more secret places in Tenerife by reading our blogpost and downloading our app, TenerifeBuzz.

Hidden gems in Tenerife

Hidden gems in Tenerife

Get ready to take an adventurous trip off the beaten path in the beautiful island of Tenerife. Not many people know about these secret places and that is what makes them so special. Some  are natural monuments carved by the forces of wind, water and time while others are created by artists trying to make a point. Let’s get started.

The lunar landscape near Vilaflor

While this is not an easy hike, it is certainly a must. The scenery is terrific and it will remind you of your favourite science-fiction movies. The lunar landscape is located in a remote area in the South of Tenerife where you can find many hiking trails that are not very popular among tourists. It is an amazing place for contemplation because the way nature carved these beautiful sculptures is just breathtaking. Do not forget your sunscreen because the trail is in the South, so the Sun is always shiny.

La Piedra de la Rosa

So maybe you can figure it out by the name – a stone in the form of a rose. Yes, indeed, nature in Tenerife created the most artistic natural monuments. Located close to the Northern road that goes up to Teide National Park, this stunning rock formation is both unique and serene. Also, the place is really calm, there are not many tourists around and you can enjoy the beautiful pine forest around. The road that gets you there is also a must, because it gives you perspective of the volcano and the Corona Forestal. Just take a picture here and impress everyone with this beautiful natural monument.

The moss lady statue in Santa Ursula

Santa Ursula is a little town in the North of the island that has a romantic touch to it. In the Quinta Garden, there is one surprising element – the four meter statue of a woman that is covered in moss, succulents and sometimes flowers. This piece of art shows how nicely you can blend human art with nature, while also adding value to a Canarian city. Because of the nice combination of colours, this is also a great place for nice social media pictures.

The Giant Egyptian vulture in Los Silos

This sculpture has the purpose of creating environmental awareness for the locals and tourists as well. The Egyptian Vulture used to be a common sight in all the Canary islands, but now it is in danger of extinction. The sculpture that we are talking about is entirely made of rubbish collected from the ocean. The artist is Bordalo II and he tries to make his point about the need for climate and environment action by creating statues out of trash. We recommend this spot because the city is nice and the sculpture is close to the ocean, so the view is impressive.

So, for those of you who like art carved by nature or by humans, Tenerife is the right place for you because it gives you the chance to admire both. The most special places in the North of Tenerife

The most special places in the North of Tenerife

If you ask people what is their favourite site in Tenerife, they will tell you about the beautiful beaches in the South and the mighty El Teide. Despite that, we think that the North of the island has something unique to offer for all of you – beautiful cities, good food, scenic beaches and impressive cliffs. Here are our favourite suggestions for you.

Icod de los Vinos – a city close to your heart

Icod is surrounded by a romantic atmosphere and it offers you the opportunity to walk between seignioral houses and historic buildings. The plaza in the middle of the city has the appearance of a botanical garden. Walking around Icod gives you the feeling that you went back in time, like 500 years ago. There are two unique things about this site – firstly, here you can find Cueva del Viento, the largest volcanic cave in Europe. It is what geologists call a lava tube – this basically means that it was formed by the flow of lava. Secondly, the 22 meter high Drago Millenario is a magnificent tree that has witnessed the entire history of the city. It is the oldest of its kind.

Los Roques Beach – for the photographer in you

This is probably the best place in Tenerife for your Instagram shot. Just remember to go there when the tide is low so that you can actually walk all the way to the beautiful rock formations that are competing against gravity. Maybe it is not the beach of choice for swimming and sunbathing but it certainly is the place to go for all those passionate about photography.

The pools in Bajamar – have fun like in the good old days

This is such an entertaining place because you can enjoy the playful ocean waves without any danger. There are two big pools and a small one situated right on the edge of the ocean. Being an area well known for the big waves, you can have fun with the splashes coming straight to you, inside the pool. It is definitely a family-friendly destination.

Mirador de San Pedro – the place that takes your breath away

There are so many beautiful viewpoints in the North from where you can admire the ocean and the notched cliffs but this is the best. Also, it offers some of the best views for sunset watching. Located close to Puerto de la Cruz and right above Paisaje Protegido de Rambla de Castro, there is no place like it. Palm trees will be in the center of attention. Also, it is a very nice place for easy hikes. Enjoy a glass of wine on your way back.
