The Adeje Abinque prize is awarded in Adeje by the Asociación San Juan to recognize women who stand out for their contribution to the life of the municipality. Over recent years it has been won by Walk for Life founder Brigitte Gypen, by young world bodyboard champion Alexandra Rinder, and by cheesemaker and co-owner of the Tijoco-based dairy Montesdeoca Ángeles Nieves García Rodríguez.

This year’s winner is Rosa María Pérez Meiriño, the highly regarded music teacher from the Adeje school of music and dance. She will receive her award on Friday 8 March, International Women’s Day. She is in the centre of the above photograph taken when she was told she was the recipient: also present are councillor for equality Carmen Lucia Rodríguez del Toro and Adeje mayor José Miguel Rodriguez Fraga.
